Blog #7 - Exercising

Welcome to Day 7 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! Now one week into our journey with The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal, I hope that you are getting into a rhythm with setting and hitting your daily W9AD goals. In today’s blog, we are going to focus on Your Fitness, beginning with exercising your physical body.

Hot Steppin'

Exercising is essential for anyone attempting to live a healthy and fulfilling life. The vast amount of health benefits associated with exercise have led people to refer to it as a miracle cure for lots of ailments, and yet many people do not take their daily dose.

One of my favourite forms of exercise is walking. This is because it is a free and easy way to get more active, lose weight, and generally become healthier. Walking is a low impact way to build stamina, burn excess calories, and improve the health of your heart.

As well as helping you increase your physical fitness, getting out in nature for a walk is a great way to be mindful (and even connect with a friend), helping you tick off multiple parts of the W9AD at the same time.

I have spent countless hours hot steppin’ around the North East, both alone and with others, and I highly recommend it to boost your health and wellbeing.

The Fellowship of the Ring (Around North Tyneside)

I’ve taken on several walking challenges over the years, including the UK 3 Peaks in 24 hours, the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

So, not too long after my mother founded Live Well with Cancer, I wanted to take on a challenge to raise funds for the cause, and it was only natural that it would involve walking.

Thankfully, I wasn’t the only one wanting to take on a challenge for charity. My friends at The Alpha Collective, a men’s group united by a desire to improve health and wellbeing, came up with the idea of walking a 30-mile loop around North Tyneside. Ten of us would form a fellowship and hot step to all corners of North Tyneside.

Unfortunately, we made the mistake of making plans during the pandemic. With restrictions in place, we were prevented from doing the challenge as a group, but I could do the honours and fly the flag for Live Well with Cancer and The Alpha Collective. With my very good friends, Jonny and Dogtor Oliver Watson, offering socially distanced support, I walked 57,708 steps that day, accidentally doing an extra 2.5 miles because of a couple of wrong turns before and after Holywell Dene.

One day, the Fellowship will unite to take on the Ring (Around North Tyneside). In the meantime, I will be keeping my fitness up by walking at least 5,000 steps each day.

Call to Action!

Go for a walk! You don’t need to walk anywhere near 32.5 miles to benefit your health. Whether alone or with a friend, introducing a daily walk is a great way to get you moving and enjoy some fresh air in your lungs.

If you'd like your company for your walk, Live Well with Cancer host a monthly Walk n' Talk. Please email livewellwithcancer@gmail.com for more information.
