Welcome to Day 90 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! After 90 days of blogs about the Wellbeing 9-a-Day, including stories from my life, and details about the Hero’s Journey, the time has finally come for me to bring this blog to a close. In today’s blog, I am write about the Hero and the importance of Answering the Call in as you go forward in life.
The Hero
Between days 71-80 of this blog, I wrote about the nine stages of the Hero’s Journey, a life structure that shows the process of change and growth.
The Hero’s Journey shows us the story of transformation, offering us a road map for how to move forward in life and acquire new knowledge and skills that will serve us now and into the future.
While the blogs I wrote gave a strong introduction to the concept, I chose to leave it to the very end to write about the person at the centre of the transformation – YOU, the Hero.
The Hero is the person who Answers the Call and perseveres through the Trials and Ordeals to claim a meaningful reward. They actively choose to go on an adventure to transform their deeper self, and in doing so… they transform the world around them.
As humans, we love stories of Heroes. Whether myths or movies, we respond to the tales of Heroes accepting the calls to adventure, overcoming the obstacles of the quest, and utilising what they have learned to improve the world around them.
These stories inspire us to become more of ourselves. They show us that we must go through struggles and overcome them if we are to claim the rewards that we seek. They highlight that we can’t reach the top of the mountain if we are not first willing to go into the depths of the cave.
Answering the Call
Here’s a secret… YOU are the Hero in your own story.
You have answered calls to adventure and transformed yourself in the past, and you will do so again in the future. That is your destiny, to choose to answer the call and take on new adventures.
It takes courage and bravery to cross the threshold and enter the Special World, which is why many people Refuse the Call or abandon their journey during the Trials or the Ordeal.
Sometimes, we even have the decision taken away from us.
Every day, people are thrust into a Hero’s Journey when they receive a cancer diagnosis and must come to terms with the Trials and Ordeal of the road of recovery.
This shows us that, whether we choose to accept the call or not, we will be sent on journeys of transformation, where we must adapt to an everchanging world.
By finding the courage to accept calls to adventure on your own terms, you can prepare yourself to be stronger when life takes the choice from you.
My Hero’s Journeys
Over the past 90 days, I accepted two calls to adventure that have helped me develop as a person and a writer, while also helping me learn a lot about myself as a person.
The first was my journey to transformed wellbeing with The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal.
Since 19th January, I have been building daily habits to improve my wellbeing. Day by day, little by little, I have let go of the old and worked towards a new and better version of myself.
Trialling the journal with volunteers across the North East has also helped us to improve the journal so that the next version will be even better and will continue to improve people’s health and wellbeing long into the future, something we are very proud of.
My second Hero’s Journey has been this 90-day blog writing fundraiser, a challenge that has stretched me to my limits at times.
In the 90 blogs, I have written over 53,000 words about the Wellbeing 9-a-Day, overloading me with work that I chose to take on in addition to the multiple writing projects already complete for work.
If I could go back six months and talk to my younger self, I would tell myself not to take on the challenge, and perhaps that would be sage advice.
Now I have come to the end of the challenge, I'm glad that I Accepted the Call. The journey has transformed me into a better person, helping me delve deeper into the Wellbeing 9-a-Day, the Hero’s Journey, and myself.
I have also been able to raise funds for Live Well with Cancer, a charity founded by my mother, which empowers those affected by cancer to improve their health and wellbeing.
If you can, please show your support by donating to my JustGiving page. I am so close to hitting my £1,000 target and any penny I raise will support anyone affected by cancer in North Tyneside, the surrounding areas, and beyond.
Call to Action!
Just as the Hero does not walk alone in the Hero’s Journey, I have only been able to do this blog because of the support I have received from the people I love. I would like to say a massive thank you to Jervie for designing and uploading the blogs, to Jon, for his editing and proofreading expertise, and to my mama for supporting me every step of the way. I would also like to thank everyone who has sponsored me, read the blogs, and supported the campaign during this challenge. Keep being Heroic!
