Blog #88 – Today I Get to… Self-care

Welcome to Day 88 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! Yesterday, we continued our final look at each of the habits within The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal, considering how Nourishing yourself with a balanced and healthy diet can boost your overall wellbeing. In today’s blog, I move onto Self-caring and the importance of building a better relationship with yourself.

Self-caring

Of all the habits in The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal, Self-caring seems to be the habit that people have benefitted from most, perhaps because they have neglected to build good self-care habits in the past.

In many ways, each of the habits in the Wellbeing 9-a-Day are a way of caring for yourself. Whether Being Mindful, Nourishing or Connecting, the other habits are a way of caring for yourself.

However, by placing special focus on giving yourself the care you need, you can help yourself recover from issues or prevent future issues from occurring.

At the start of my journal, my Self-caring goals were focused on my physical health. After suffering a slipped disc in my back over five years ago, my daily stretching routines have been essential, first to help me recover, and subsequently to prevent recurrence of the injury.

As I have continued my journey, I have realised the need to approach my Self-caring differently.

It was not enough just to care for my body – it was time to take a more holistic approach to my Self-caring.

Something For Me

At the halfway point of the journal, I introduced a new Self-caring habit. Each day, I would do something that was just for me.

I have done a variety of different things that are just for me, from taking a bath to buying Kerplunk from a charity shop.

More often than not, the something for me is watching my favourite shows. Twice a week, I watch All Elite Wrestling, while Pedro Pascal looking after a special child has been a ritual in recent works, starting with The Last of Us and transitioning to The Mandalorian.

Where in the past I would often do these things alongside other tasks, making them the something for me has encouraged me to watch them more consciously, ensuring I take the time to enjoy the things I enjoy instead of having one eye elsewhere.

The self-care you need will be different from the self-care I need. We are all different, with different wants and needs.

By taking time each day to care for yourself, you can build habits that boost your relationship with yourself and your overall wellbeing at the same time.

Call to Action!

Think about ways that you can care for yourself. Whether rehabilitating an existing issue or preventing a future issue from occurring, look to build Self-caring habits that look after your mind, body, and soul. Each of us have our own wants and needs, so no one is better placed than you to identify the self-care that will benefit you the most.
