Blog #86 – Today I Get to… Appreciate

Welcome to Day 86 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! Yesterday, we continued our final look at each of the habits within The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal, considering how Learning helps you to expand your mind and improve your mental fitness. In today’s blog, I move onto Appreciating and the importance of taking time each day to focus on the good things in your life.

Appreciating

Appreciating the good things in life can be easy when things are going well. When the sun is shining and you are surrounded by the people you love, there can be seemingly endless things that you are grateful for.

Gratitude can be much more difficult when things are going badly. When you feel overcome by challenges, it can be hard to see the silver lining in the clouds.

That’s why it is so important to build a consistent habit of appreciating the things that lift your life, as and when they are happening, regardless of whether times are currently rough or smooth.

Just like Being Mindful is a skill that requires regular practice, Appreciating and being grateful for the good things in your life is something that you can get better at over time.

By practising the act of being grateful every day, you can get better and better at finding things to appreciate, even on days when things aren’t going well.

Angela P. Precíatíon

Since starting my journey with The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal, I have approached Appreciating in various ways.

At first, my goal was to appreciate something different every day that I used the journal. This evolved into appreciating something new and something I loved.

From Day 30, I set myself the target of appreciating something new, someone I love, and something about me, which helped me be grateful for things on three different levels.

At my Day 60 Review, I created a new ritual where I spend time each day holding a sculpted angel, which I have come to call Angela P. Precíatíon.

Spending time with Angela each day has helped me make a practice of appreciating the things in my life that I love.

As I come to the end of this challenge, I have moved away from ticking off things I appreciate, and I have created a ritual for Appreciating that gives me a period each day to focus on all the things I love.

My new habit also feeds into my Being Mindful and Self-caring goals, ensuring my holistic approach to wellbeing continues to benefit me moving forward.

Call to Action!

How often do you appreciate the good things in your life? Taking time each day to focus on the things you are grateful for helps to engage your positive emotions. With just a few minutes of daily reflection, you can build a habit that shines a light on the things that you love and increases your emotional fitness now and into the future.
