Welcome to Day 80 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! Over the past ten days, we have looked at each of the nine stages of the Hero’s Journey in turn, seeing how each part of the journey transforms the Hero, who then transforms the world. In today’s blog, I look back on what we have learned and look forward to the final ten days of my blog writing challenge.
Looking Back
When you understand the structure of the Hero’s Journey, you can use it as a guide to overcome obstacles in your life. You can follow the process of transformation and come out better on the other side.
The Hero’s Journey shows us that times are often toughest just before transformation. When life is dark, it offers a light to guide us on our journey.
Humans improve by undergoing hardship, which perhaps explains our love of stories that follow the Hero’s Journey structure.
For thousands of years, cultures from around the globe have shared stories that follow this structure, once around camp fires… and now on screens everywhere.
As humans, we respond to tales of heroes who suffer through the darkness and are reborn into the light. Tales of transformation resonate with us on conscious and unconscious levels.
They can act as maps when you get stuck on your journey, helping you to learn how to get from who you are now to who you want to become in the future.
No Hero’s Journey is taken alone. The Hero has specific tasks that only they can complete, but there are always new relationships and long terms friendships to be forged and reforged along the way.
Each Hero’s Journey is an upward spiral, with each adventure moving you ever higher on the quest of life. Each transformation arms you with new knowledge and skills, and friends that will help you on your next Hero’ Journey.
Imagine a series of increasingly tall mountain peaks or a spiral staircase. Each adventure is the next mountain. With each new transformation, we build upon victories, or we learn from defeats.
No matter where you are on your own Hero’s Journey, it is never too late or too early to understand the steps that are needed to transform into something better.
Looking Forward
I am now ten days from finishing my journey with The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal, a Hero’s Journey that has seen me build daily habits that will benefit my health and wellbeing.
The Wellbeing 9-a-Day has empowered me to create holistic change on my journey, with my fitness and my relationships, something I will be continuing to Day 90 and beyond.
One thing I will not be continuing after Day 90 is writing a daily blog.
Having accepted the call and passed through the trials and ordeal of overloading myself with work, I can now see the end of the challenge, and I look forward to establishing a new normal in my life.
As with using the journal itself, writing this blog has taught me a great deal about myself and the world around me.
For the last ten days, I am going to write one more blog about each of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day, before bringing this Hero’s Journey to a close.
Call to Action!
Look back on what you have learned about the Hero’s Journey in the last 10 days. Are there any calls to adventure you have been refusing? Have you claimed the reward but not yet re-integrated it into your normal life? By reflecting on your Hero’s Journeys, you can identify areas where transformation is needed and work towards positive change.
This blog was written as part of a 90-day blog writing fundraiser for Live Well with Cancer, a volunteer-led charity serving North Tyneside and the surrounding areas. If you enjoyed this blog, please show your appreciation by donating to my JustGiving page. Every penny raised from donations or sales of the journal will help deliver workshops, events and support groups that empower better health and wellbeing for those affected by cancer, including family, friends, carers, and healthcare workers.
