Blog #63 – Lessons Learned: Letting Go

Welcome to Day 63 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! Yesterday, I looked at what I have learned about Being Mindful and tweaked my habits for the remainder of my time with The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal. In today’s blog, I look at the lessons I have learned about Letting Go and identify a new target that will take me to the end of this challenge.

Lessons Learned

Letting Go is different from the other habits in the Wellbeing 9-a-Day because it is the only one where you are not doing something.

Since the start of my journey to transformed wellbeing, I have been letting go of the same bad habit that had been with me throughout my 20s and into my early 30s.

To help keep me strong when tempted, I track the number of days I have let go of the habit, so that succumbing to temptation comes at a bigger cost.

As my streak has grown, I have become more and more confident that I will achieve my goal each day, to the point where I tick off Letting Go first thing in the morning.

For the past 18 days, I have also let go of having more than one coffee each day. While I still enjoy my daily coffee, limiting my intake to one cup means that I reduce my caffeine intake and enjoy what I do have even more.

Going Forward

Now that I have let go of one bad habit and limited another, I have decided to let go of chocolate for the final 30 days of this challenge.

Between me and you, I can be very naughty when it comes to treats. I have countless examples over the years, but I will only share one recent example in the interest of saving my reputation.

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend was given a two-tier box of milk tray by my aunty for her birthday. Though she only had three chocolates, I demolished the rest within a fortnight, and would have done so much earlier if the chocolates had been given to me.

When contemplating this goal, I toyed with the idea of letting go of all treats, but I felt that chocolate was hitting a good level when I took everything into consideration.

After all, no chocolate rules out a lot of treats, while still leaving the door open for me to enjoy a well-deserved dessert if the occasion calls for it.

Time will tell if I am able to achieve this goal, but I know from the outset that my wellbeing will improve if I stick to my intention.

Call to Action!

Think about the things that you would like to let go. What bad habits could you step away from to improve your overall wellbeing? By identifying the habits that are negatively affecting your health, you can work towards a future without them, one day at a time.
