Welcome to Day 58 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! So far in this run of blogs, I have focused on Your Relationships and how improving your Nourishing and Self-caring goals can boost your health and wellbeing. In today’s blog, I shift my focus to Connecting and the importance of building strong relationships with the people in your family.
Connecting Better
As I have progressed with The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal, I have expanded my Connecting targets to ensure that I communicate with the people I care about the most.
Now that I am nearing Day 60, I have tweaked my Connecting goal so that it has three parts to it.
I do something each day to connect with my girlfriend at home, ensuring that my relationship with the person I live with remains strong.
I communicate with a member of my family, whether in person or by phone, to maintain my connection with my parents, siblings, or extended family.
I connect with a friend, either in person or by phone, even if it is just a check in and a well done.
This new way of approaching Connecting reminds me to make a conscious effort to communicate with the people I love, something I have not been particularly active at in the past.
The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal has empowered me to build habits that encourage me to initiate communication.
Elliott Family Values
As the youngest of four siblings born within five years of each other, I know that I have been more fortunate than most with my family. I have been blessed with a brother and two sisters, each of whom have taught me invaluable lessons both through their victories and their defeats.
As a beneficiary of these lessons, I feel it is my duty to pass on the things I have learned to the next generation, which is why I take my uncle duties very seriously.
I have spent hours teaching my nephews different sports and games, to the point where they are now better than me. I have had the pleasure of introducing them to my favourite films and shows, even going so far as making a series of videos called Uncle Ben Presents…
Being an uncle is one of life’s great pleasures. You get the benefits of connecting with your nieces and nephews with the option of giving them back to their parents at the end of the day.
Teaching the next generation is a responsibility that I think we all must share and, in my experience, the value you give is far exceeded by the value that you get in return.
Call to Action!
Connect with someone you love today. Whether a person you live with, a family member, or a friend, take the time to reach out to someone and make a conscious connection. If you can’t connect in person, pick up the phone and let someone you love know that you are thinking about them.
