Blog #36 – The Nine Areas of Life

Welcome to Day 36 of the Wellbeing 9-a-Day blog! Over the past few days, I have reflected on the Hero’s Journey and my personal quest to become a gameshow legend. In today’s blog, I look at the third act of the Hero’s Journey and how the Nine Areas of Life can help you set meaningful goals.

Returning with the Reward

Over the past few days, I have been using my gameshow appearances to help illustrate the Hero’s Journey structure. This has been a personal quest for me that has seen the highs of success and the lows of failure in my pursuit towards the reward.

Having passed through the belly of the whale, I can now look back on those low moments as an essential part of my quest. All of it was necessary and I know there is a reward waiting for me down the line if I keep pushing.

Your reward is likely to be different to mine, but the truth is that anything worth having requires a sacrifice. You must face your own ordeal if you are to be transformed by your journey.

Remember, once you have your reward, your journey is not over. You must still re-integrate it into your life and find a new status quo.

After celebrating that victory, you can then set your sights on your next Hero’s Journey.

The Nine Areas of Life

A great way to identify goals is to use the Nine Areas of Life. Developed by our friends at Pyramid 9 Mentoring, this concept identifies nine fundamental areas of your life that contribute to your overall wellbeing.

1. VALUES

The beliefs and principles that form who you are and why you do what you do.

2. HEALTH

Your mental, emotional, and physical fitness.

3. FINANCES

Your financial status and monetary outlook.

4. CAREER

Your profession or projects that you undertake to improve your work life.

5. DOMESTICS

Your home environment, including your house, garden, and pets.

6. INTERESTS

The passions and hobbies that you pursue in your spare time.

7. CONTRIBUTION

The things you do to benefit other people and the world around you.

8. SLEEP

The act of resting and recovering.

9. RELATIONSHIPS

Your interactions and partnerships, including love and friendships.

Viewing your life in this way can help you to identify areas where you are strong and areas where you may need to place specific focus. As with most things, prevention is better than cure, and it is better to work towards fixing an issue before it manifests into a problem.

Let’s say you lose your job. At first, you may stay strong in the other Areas of Life, but how long is this likely to be the case without action? Before long, your Finances may suffer, which increases the strain on your Health, Sleep, Relationships, and so on. Soon, one Area of Life being negatively affected can impact on many others.

By becoming aware and setting goals in each of the Nine Areas of Life, you can create holistic change that benefits your overall wellbeing in the present and helps to guard against problems that may arise in the future.

Call to Action!

Set a goal for yourself in each of the Nine Areas of Life. You will probably have already set goals for some, if not all, on your journey with The Wellbeing 9-a-Day Journal. By making sure that you have goals in each area going forward, you will help to ensure that all areas of your life are moving in the right direction.
